The Semesterticket is so affordable because every student contributes to the cost through their semester fees.
What else is important to know? What do I need to show to a ticket inspector?
The Semesterticket does not allow first-class travel on Deutsche Bahn trains. Night-time travel on the city’s trams is included. For VAG’s night-time services (in German) (Safer Traffic), SBG and AST for travel into the area around Freiburg, an additional ticket is required. Students from other universities can access affordable travel with the Regiokarte Schüler (regional ticket for schoolchildren) or the Deutschland-Ticket JugendBW (in German).

Is there any way to save on travel without a Semesterticket?
Use of the RVF’s public transport services is free from 7 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on Sundays and bank holidays on presentation of a valid student card from one of the participating universities. Students of the university and the Pädagogische Hochschule can get the 19 Uhr-Nachweis (7 p.m. ticket), which is available online. If you use a 7 p.m. ticket, you will still need to present an official photo ID to the ticket inspector.
